Why did you decide to become a plastic surgeon?

Plastic surgery appeals to both the engineer and the clinician in me. I studied biomedical engineering at Harvard before training in medicine and surgery in Australia, and I have a longstanding interest in the relationship between form and function. Plastic surgery brings those interests together in a very personal way: each patient has different anatomy, concerns and goals to consider. My particular interest in breast surgery and body contouring reflects how much I enjoy detailed planning and practical problem-solving, with the patient’s priorities guiding the discussion.

What is your philosophy of patient care?

I want patients to feel comfortable asking questions and clear about the decisions they are making. That starts with listening to what matters to them and understanding their concerns without judgement. I aim to be approachable and straightforward, explaining the options alongside the limitations, risks and recovery involved. Careful surgery matters, and so does the support surrounding it. My approach is to give each person the information and time they need to decide whether surgery is right for them, with realistic expectations and a clear understanding of the next steps.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy getting to know patients and working through the details of their care. Body contouring after significant weight loss is a particular interest because each person brings a different history, with individual concerns about comfort, function and appearance. I find the planning and technical challenges rewarding, as well as the opportunity to follow a patient’s progress through recovery and the huge psychological transformation it can bring. The variety in my work, including breast surgery and reconstruction after skin cancer, also keeps me interested and learning. Being trusted with someone’s care is a responsibility I value.

What are your interests outside of medicine?

Outside medicine, I enjoy yoga, staying active and making time for friends. Travel is another big interest, especially when I can combine exploring a new place with hiking or time outdoors. I’m curious about health and longevity, particularly how we can stay active and well as we get older. I also enjoy design, which connects with my engineering background and my interest in how things look and work. A busy surgical practice makes downtime valuable, and I appreciate having interests and friendships that give me a different perspective.

Sydney has been the centre of my life for more than 25 years, so building my practice here feels like a natural choice. My friendships and professional connections are here, and I value the opportunities to combine clinical work with teaching and research. My work has also taken me to Darwin, Broken Hill and the South Coast, reflecting my interest in rural and Indigenous healthcare. Those experiences have reinforced the importance of access to specialist care and of taking the time to understand the community and the person in front of me.
